I initially trained in Medicine at the Universities of St Andrews and Manchester, and became a consultant physician in Occupational Medicine, a field that encompasses a huge variety of human social and material problems. Coming from an artistic family, I pursued my art in parallel, attending numerous courses in painting, drawing and batik.
In my professional life, I never lost sight of issues relating to social justice and fairness to the individual, which form an undercurrent to many of my pieces. I see my work as an expressive reflection of the places, senses, experiences and philosophies that have shaped my outlook, which beckon the viewer to enter a world of values beyond the material one of everyday living. Most recently, this has culminated in the series of illustrations I completed for the book Within the Pregnant Pause by Amali Lokugamage, which looks at the creative potential linked to birth and beyond.
